Biographie
He was an American poet born in 1888 who died in 1916 while fighting with the French Foreign Legion in World War I. His poetry often blends romantic idealism with a fatalistic acceptance of death, shaped by his experiences on the battlefields of France. Seeger’s work is characterised by lyrical intensity, vivid imagery, and a solemn contemplation of heroism and mortality. His most famous poem, “I Have a Rendezvous with Death,” reflects a calm, resolute anticipation of death and became emblematic of the war’s lost generation. He also wrote other poems that celebrated nature, love, and the beauty of sacrifice. His manuscripts were collected posthumously in the volume Poems (1916), which secured his literary legacy. Though his output was limited, his war poetry stands among the most enduring American verse of the Great War. Seeger’s significance lies in his ability to articulate the tension between youthful idealism and the brutal reality of combat. He remains a poignant figure in the tradition of soldier-poets.
