Arthur Stringer (1874–1950) was a Canadian-born writer who spent much of his career in the United States, working as a poet, novelist, and screenwriter. His poetry often explored themes of the sea, wilderness, and the tensions of modern life, frequently employing free verse at a time when formal verse dominated. Stringer published several poetry collections, including Open Water and The Woman in the Rain, and he is recognized as an early experimenter with free verse in Canadian literature. In addition to poetry, he wrote popular adventure and crime novels, such as The Wire Tappers and The Shadow, and he contributed to early Hollywood as a screenwriter. His work bridges Canadian and American literary traditions, and he remains noted for his versatility across genres and media.
