Dhan Gopal Mukerji was an Indian-American writer active in the first half of the twentieth century, known for both prose and poetry in English. His poetry collections include Sandhya, Songs of Twilight (1917) and Rajani, Songs of the Night (1922). His verse often explores themes of nature, spirituality, and the intersection of Eastern and Western thought. He employed lyrical and meditative imagery drawn from Indian landscapes and religious traditions. Mukerji's work reflects the experience of the Indian diaspora and an attempt to bridge cultural divides through literary expression. He is also recognized for his children's books, notably winning the Newbery Medal in 1928 for Gay-Neck, the Story of a Pigeon. His poetry, though less prominent than his prose, contributed to the early corpus of Indian writing in English. Mukerji's writings were among the first by an author of Indian origin to gain significant attention in the United States. He remains a notable figure in the history of cross-cultural literature.
