Biographie

Edgar Lee Masters was an American poet, novelist, and biographer born in 1868 in Garnett, Kansas, and raised in Illinois. He practiced law in Chicago before achieving literary fame with Spoon River Anthology (1915), a collection of over two hundred free-verse epitaphs spoken by the deceased residents of a fictional small town. The poems expose the gap between public respectability and private reality, often revealing adultery, corruption, and unfulfilled ambition. His verse is characterized by plain, colloquial language and a realistic, unsentimental tone. Masters is considered a major figure in the Chicago literary renaissance and an early proponent of free verse in American poetry. In addition to many later poetry collections, he wrote biographies of Abraham Lincoln and Mark Twain, and a sequel volume titled The New Spoon River (1924). His work influenced later poets through its unflinching portrayal of ordinary American life and its use of multiple first-person perspectives. Today, Spoon River Anthology remains his most widely read and studied work.
