Biografie

Edward Thomas was an English writer of the early twentieth century, known primarily for his poetry, though he also produced criticism, essays, and a novel. Born in London in 1878, he worked as a journalist and reviewer before turning to poetry in 1914, encouraged by his friend Robert Frost. His poems frequently explore the English countryside, rural life, and the passage of time, employing plain language and traditional forms. The outbreak of the First World War introduced themes of loss, change, and the fragility of home. He enlisted in 1915 and wrote some of his most memorable war poems while serving, but did not see his only collection, “Poems,” published during his lifetime; it appeared posthumously in 1917. He was killed at the Battle of Arras in 1917. Thomas is often regarded as one of the finest poets of the war, though his work transcends that category, capturing enduring tensions between nature and human experience.
