Elizabeth Madox Roberts (1881–1941) was an American poet and novelist associated with the Southern Renaissance. Born in Perryville, Kentucky, she graduated from the University of Chicago and spent much of her life in Kentucky. Her poetry draws on the landscapes, folklore, and rural traditions of her native state, often employing a lyrical and imagistic style. Her first collection, 'Under the Tree' (1922), focuses on childhood and nature and received critical notice. Roberts also wrote novels, including 'The Time of Man' (1926), which portray the lives of Kentucky farmers. Her later poetry collections include 'Song in the Meadow' (1940). Her work is characterized by precise observation and musical language. Roberts's writing contributed to the regionalist movement in American literature.
