Biografie

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was a 19th-century American poet and a central figure among the Fireside Poets. Born in 1807, he became the most popular poet of his era in the United States. He taught at Bowdoin College and Harvard University before devoting himself to writing. His poetry often draws on American history, Native American legends, and European literary traditions, blending narrative with lyricism. Works such as 'Paul Revere's Ride' and 'The Song of Hiawatha' are marked by vivid imagery and a memorable rhythmic quality. He also wrote longer narrative poems like 'Evangeline' and 'The Courtship of Miles Standish,' which explore themes of displacement and love. His translations, including Dante's 'Divine Comedy,' were highly regarded. Longfellow's influence helped shape a national literary identity in the 19th century. His home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, is preserved as a National Historic Site.
