Biographie

Katherine Mansfield (1888–1923) was a New Zealand-born writer associated with literary modernism, primarily known for her short stories but also the author of a modest number of poems. Her poetry often explores themes of nature, love, loss, and the transient quality of experience. The verse is typically concise and lyrical, employing clear imagery and a personal, reflective tone. Mansfield's poems were published in various periodicals during her lifetime, and a collection titled Poems was issued posthumously in 1923, edited by her husband John Middleton Murry. While her poetry is less central to her reputation than her short fiction, it is regarded as an extension of her modernist sensibility. In the context of early twentieth-century literature, Mansfield's poetic output contributes to the era's experimentation with free verse and interiority. Her most influential works remain her short story collections such as Bliss and The Garden Party, but her poems offer additional insight into her artistic vision.
