Biografie

Sarah Flower Adams was an English poet and hymnwriter of the early Victorian period. Born in 1805 into a Unitarian family, she was the daughter of radical journalist Benjamin Flower and sister of composer Eliza Flower. She briefly worked as an actress before turning to literary pursuits. Her poetry is marked by a deeply personal religious sensibility, often exploring themes of faith, nature, and the soul's yearning for the divine. Adams employed simple, lyrical language that resonated with devotional audiences. Her most enduring contribution is the hymn 'Nearer, My God, to Thee', first published in 1841, which became a widely cherished piece in Christian worship. She also wrote longer poetic works, including 'Vivia Perpetua', a dramatic poem centered on the early Christian martyr. Though her output was limited, the lasting popularity of her hymn secures her a recognized role in the history of English religious poetry.
