One failure after another,
Similar trends are noticed,
In the women I fall for,
In how the relationships go,
Bad luck is one possibility,
But why so consistent?
Bad taste is another,
But that’s not the constant,
I’m the constant,
The common denominator,
The only reasonable solution,
The inevitable perpetrator,
I give generously,
Receive minimal in return,
Yet I put forth every last effort,
Trying to make things work,
Catching her in another lie,
With another man,
Late as usual,
It’s all my fault,
A bad day at work,
Her mother getting fired,
Her softball team losing,
It’s all my fault,
A blizzard in March,
A flood in the street,
The power going out,
It’s all my fault,
Gas prices rising,
A flight delay,
A bad waiter,
It’s all my fault,
I wanted to go into the sun
where it was warm and could be warm
inside too, your face is the same and not.
You told me
to the music of the gaunt men playing ball and
the women walking slowly and the monkey hanging from the old tree
You told me
You were born with crooked legs sleeping in braces
and always straight, that later
you couldn't sleep any other way, the blood
the pain
and no climax and no climax, what do you call it
you said
never reaching orgasm.
I thought of the blame of your parents
which is the blame of society
i know it’s my fault
i know this by now
i know you meant it all
i know you know how.
i know your heart has no heat
i know i can’t be sure of mine
i know you laughed at my demise
i know you hope there’s no lifeline.
i know that you enjoyed yourself
i know that it’s now my turn
i know you’re still watching
i know you’re fearful that you’ll burn.
i know it’s not your fault
i know it hardly never ever is
i know your blood is laced with salt
i know you never ask why not.
Men are brought low by blame.
So that they live with shame.
Kindness and love and praise
Are strong to heal and raise.
