Camera out, you stalk
a mourning cloak,
avid as a book thief
for that two-page
spread of darkness
glowing in the leafless woods,
you and the butterfly—
both quick to fly but loathe to leave.
And edged in light.
First phoebe of spring.
He flutters in front of me,
drawn by a slow fly.
In my email, a copy
of a tintype portrait
I sat for last August—
that still moment
five seconds long,
that black box.
My camera has auto focus; switch it on, point, press -
It focuses on its own
All you have to do is to press down all the way.
Of late, the auto focus doesn't work.
I pull the focus ring manually, forward and backward
It never focuses sharply.
This is the only camera I have; guess I will have to live
With images blurred.
To buy a new one is not an option
Till the next life, if there is one.
But I do take out my camera everyday
Brush it and blow away the dust
Tweak it here and there
Imagine sharp and clear images.
One day, it might snap back to life.
Every time I am caught
With my back to someone's camera
I look aghast
Refusing to believe, to accept
That the unfamiliar posterior of a human head
With dirty grey wisps of hair
Like an odd-looking horseshoe
Stuck on a hairless scalp
That reflects the light of the camera flash
Is really me
Hiding behind an anterior
I thought I knew all my life -
A view of myself that I will never see
With my own eyes...
Focus. Flashlight. Snapshot.
Life treats us unkind,
we all suffer from no might,
there's no escape... no, there's not.
Hiding and seeking,
playing games when we were young,
showing each other tongues;
When our eyes should be shut, we were peeking.
When we should be peeking, our eyes are now shut,
our tongues have changed into fingers,
that magical feeling that lingers
is gone with lots of hiding, yet no seeking. Cut.
I lost my patronage in Spoon River
From trying to put my mind in the camera
To catch the soul of the person.
The very best picture I ever took
Was of Judge Somers, attorney at law.
He sat upright and had me pause
Till he got his cross-eye straight.
Then when he was ready he said “all right.”
And I yelled “overruled” and his eye turned up.
And I caught him just as he used to look
When saying “I except.”
