Tower of marl, homely
in a chess set.
Fuddled, talking, the others fell.
The tower we made is quiet.
Overcome with drink, I ride in.
The tower stood waiting.
A man respects the discourse
of so many cavaliers.
Pawns become queens;
Queens run all over the board
Bishops slash
Knights kick
Rooks ram …
What do I, the king do,
Helpless, bound,
At the mercy of the rest?
Alone in the crumbling castle,
I rue…
I never wanted to be the king…
I know the rules,
But refuse to abide,
Many others do,
And seem happier than I,
A game of chess,
Awaiting the next move,
Looking the opponent in the eyes,
And knowing what they’re about to do,
A game of poker,
A serious look across one’s face,
Maintaining a sense of mystery,
Not wanting to give anything away,
A game of football,
Taking advantage of the other’s weaknesses,
Plotting this for sixty minutes,
Until they finally give in,
