Swinging
behind her
swinging behind
is swinging
behind her
like a lantern
her swinging
behind.
The vision of the sunset light
Of ghostly white :
The day is the twilight perfume
Too full to fly away.
O, Japan in milky July,
What an art of dream untold !
You know, over the blue and deep of the seas,
(O the wilderness of the Pacific!)
Like a lantern in love-air, she sways
In pain that is song.
Blinder than oak-trees in the wind
Endlessly weaving sighs into a poem
To sight,
He sits, the light of one pale purple lantern
Seeping into his dream-hollowed face,
Like floating, transparent words
Pale with unuttered meanings.
He mends a flute and sighs as though
Its shadow leaned heavily upon his heart
And told him things his dead eyes could not grasp.
In my Spanish cloak,
And old slouch hat,
And overshoes of felt,
And Tyke, my faithful dog,
And my knotted hickory cane,
I slipped about with a bull’s-eye lantern
From door to door on the square,
As the midnight stars wheeled round,
And the bell in the steeple murmured
From the blowing of the wind;
And the weary steps of old Doc Hill
Sounded like one who walks in sleep,
And a far-off rooster crew.
And now another is watching Spoon River
As others watched before me.
And here we lie, Doc Hill and I
I HAVE drunk your health
In the red-lacquer wine cups,
But the wind-bells on the bronze lanterns
In my garden
Are corroded and fallen.
Silver-green lanterns tossing among windy branches :
So an old man thinks
Of the loves of his youth.
