The Last Place

Not long from now nor far from here’s the place where all that matters now, even if it matters then, must matter to somebody else. To anyone who finds this note: good luck and look ahead to your last place not far, not long from when and where you read this—your eyes, your mind alive and quick

The Echo

I am only a note in the chorus, A leaf in the fluttering June, A wave on the deep. These things that I struggle to utter Have all been uttered before. In many another heart The selfsame song was born, The ancient ache endured, The timeless wonder faced, The unanswered question nursed, The resurgent hunger felt, And the eternal failure known! But glad is the lip of its whisper; The wave, of its life; The leaf, of its lisp; And glad for its hour is my soul

Things

Sometimes when I am at tea with you I catch my breath At a thought that is old as the world is old And more bitter than death. It is that the spoon that you just laid down And the cup that you hold May be here shining and insolent When you are still and cold. Your careless note that I laid away May leap to my eyes like flame When the world has almost forgotten your voice Or the sound of your name. The golden Virgin da Vinci drew May smile on over my head, And daffodils nod in the silver vase When you are dead.
