A small brown moth drawn in
by the glow of his laptop
clings to the flat screen
with wings outstretched.
A few pixels show
through the clear patches
in the center of each wing.
Does that feel good? he murmurs
when the blinking cursor passes
underneath it.
The bedsprings creak
in the other room.
Beyond the softly whirring fan
the famous skyline flickers
with heat lightning as
his fingers go on clattering
LCD screen:
when I touch her face
there’s a ripple
Held remotely
says the message on your screen
when I interrupt our call to take another.
Talking or holding: you can’t do both,
even in a world whose far reaches
no longer exceed our grasp.
On the other side of the ocean, I read Resume.
When we do, you tell me laughing
you almost miss being held.
Five hours apart, yet we share a single present,
speaking, listening, from one infinitesimal
moment to the next: we hold.
I’ve never seen your face,
Nor heard your voice,
Yet feel I know you,
Through your written words,
Having never looked into your eyes,
Nor heard you laugh,
Never have I seen you smile,
Yet are feeling so close,
My imagination illustrates a picture,
Its accuracy unknown,
My mind left to wonder,
Who you really are,
Words typed on a screen,
No expressions or gestures displayed,
No tears or laughs can be seen,
No tone of voice heard,
No tone in your voice,
No words to be heard,
No emotions to be felt,
No gestures to be observed,
Attention fleeting,
Time condensed,
Easily distracted,
Seemingly entranced,
You scan and stare,
Unable to look away,
Hypnotized by the light,
Addicted to the immediacy,
When I call your name,
You irritatingly look up,
With a deer-in-the-headlights stare,
Robotic in your emotions,
Press the one powerful button,
See the shimmering colorful light,
Scroll through the smooth cold surface,
Don’t know what to tap on?
Can’t blame you
Expecting a notification?
Not happening, no not now,
Look at you, what did you hope for?
Trust me there is nothing new to see,
It’s not a party of some kind,
Just some worked off millennials,
Eagerly waiting,
May be a grand celebrity breaking news,
Or some funny vines and tiktok videos
Breaking news!
There is nothing new there,
