Biography

Born in 1861, she was a British poet, novelist, and essayist active in the 1880s. Her poetry often depicts the modern city, particularly London, with a keen eye for its landscapes and social dynamics. Themes of melancholy, isolation, and the constraints on women's lives recur throughout her work. Jewish identity and the experience of being an outsider also inform her writing. She published two volumes of poetry: 'A Minor Poet and Other Verse' in 1884 and 'A London Plane-Tree and Other Verse' in 1889, the latter appearing shortly before her death. Her verse is characterized by its direct language, urban imagery, and a tone of wistful irony. Levy also wrote novels, such as 'Reuben Sachs' (1888), which examined Anglo-Jewish middle-class society. She was part of the circle of late-Victorian feminist writers and contributed to periodicals like 'The Yellow Book'. Her significance lies in her unflinching portrayal of modern urban alienation and women's interior lives. She died by suicide in 1889 at the age of 27.
