Biography

Annie Louisa Walker was born in England in 1836 and moved to Canada in the 1850s, where she worked as a teacher and later founded a school. Her poetry collections include 'Leaves from the Backwoods' (1862), and she authored the widely known hymn 'The Night Cometh.' Her verse often explores themes of Christian faith, family, and the Canadian landscape, reflecting a blend of Victorian piety and colonial experience. Walker also wrote novels, including 'The Hollywood' (1874), which draw on her transatlantic perspectives. Her work contributed to early English-language literature in Canada, and she remains noted for her quiet, devotional lyricism.
