Biografi

Edward Taylor was an American colonial poet and Puritan minister, born around 1642 in England and deceased in 1729. He emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony and served as minister in Westfield, Massachusetts. His poetry was not published in his lifetime and was discovered in manuscript only in the 20th century. Taylor's work is known for its metaphysical style, using elaborate conceits and extended metaphors to explore religious themes. His major poetic project, "Preparatory Meditations," consists of over 200 poems written over four decades. Another significant work is "God's Determinations," a verse drama on salvation. His poetry draws on the tradition of English metaphysical poets such as John Donne and George Herbert. Taylor's themes include divine love, sin, grace, and the Puritan sacramental life. Despite his isolation on the colonial frontier, he produced a body of work now recognized as foundational in American literature. His writings provide insight into early American Puritan theology and piety.
