Born in London in 1818, she emerged from a working background and was largely self-educated. Her first collection, Lays of a Wild Harp, appeared in 1835 when she was seventeen. She became a popular figure in Victorian periodicals, contributing poems that emphasized home, family, and the beauty of the natural world. Her work often carried a humanitarian and temperance message, appealing to a broad middle-class readership. Notable poems such as 'The Old Armchair' and 'I Love the Merry Sunshine' exemplify her warm, accessible style. From 1849 to 1854 she edited Eliza Cook's Journal, a weekly paper that combined poetry, essays, and social commentary.
