- Those fair -- fictitious People
- Flowers -- Well -- if anybody
- Away from Home are some and I --
- Through those old Grounds of memory,
- Tie the Strings to my Life, My Lord,
- A happy lip -- breaks sudden
- Talk not to me of Summer Trees
- This Chasm, Sweet, upon my life
- To flee from memory
- "Heaven" has different Signs -- to me --
- My life closed twice before its close --
- Did life's penurious length
- Funny -- to be a Century
- By homely gift and hindered Words
- To tell the Beauty would decrease
- Undue Significance a starving man attaches
- Nature affects to be sedate
- 'Twas later when the summer went
- Summer laid her simple Hat
- Immured in Heaven!
Biography
An American poet who spent most of her life in Amherst, Massachusetts, leading a reclusive existence. She composed nearly 1,800 poems, but only a handful were published anonymously during her lifetime. After her death, her work was discovered and published, gaining wide recognition. Her poems often explore mortality, interior life, and the natural world, using unconventional punctuation and slant rhyme. The brevity and ambiguity of her verse create a reflective, sometimes enigmatic tone. She is now regarded as a central figure in American poetry, prefiguring modernist trends with her formal innovations. Her collected poems have influenced countless writers and remain widely studied and anthologized.
