Biografi

Ernest Dowson was an English poet, novelist, and short-story writer born in 1867 and died in 1900. He was a central figure in the Decadent movement and a member of the Rhymers' Club, alongside poets such as W. B. Yeats and Arthur Symons. His poetry often dwells on loss, disillusionment, and the brevity of beauty, drawing on classical and religious imagery. The tone is consistently lyrical and world-weary, reflecting his belief in the tragedy of earthly desire. His most famous poems include "Non Sum Qualis Eram Bonae sub Regno Cynarae" and "Vitae Summa Brevis Spem Nos Vetat Incohare Longam." Dowson's work is noted for its delicate, musical quality and his use of refrains that evoke a sense of haunting nostalgia. He also wrote several novels and short stories, though his poetry remains his lasting legacy. Influenced by French Symbolism, he helped shape the aesthetic of the English fin de siècle. His life was marked by poverty and alcoholism, and his early death contributed to the myth of the tragic Decadent poet.
