Biography

Francis Ledwidge was an Irish poet born in 1887 in Slane, County Meath, Ireland. He wrote lyric poetry that frequently draws on the natural imagery of the Boyne Valley and his rural upbringing, while also engaging with Irish nationalism. Ledwidge served in the British Army during World War I, an experience that introduced a somber, elegiac quality into his later work. His poems are noted for their musicality, precise observation of nature, and a persistent meditation on loss and memory. Although he published one collection during his lifetime, Songs of the Fields (1915), his complete poems were gathered posthumously. Ledwidge is often associated with the Irish Literary Revival, though his work stands apart for its direct engagement with the war. He died in 1917 during the Battle of Passchendaele, and his reputation has grown as a significant voice of the war poets and of early twentieth-century Irish literature.
