Biografi

Helen Hunt Jackson (1830–1885) was an American poet, novelist, and advocate for Native American rights. She published several collections of poetry, including Verses (1870) and the posthumous Sonnets and Lyrics (1886). Her verse often reflects personal grief, as she endured the deaths of her first husband and two children, and finds solace in the natural world. Jackson’s style is marked by clear, direct imagery and a restrained emotional tone, characteristic of late Romanticism. While her poetry does not explicitly address her activism, her broader literary work, including the novel Ramona and the exposé A Century of Dishonor, brought attention to the mistreatment of Native Americans. She corresponded with Emily Dickinson and was part of a literary circle that included notable editors and writers. Her poetry contributed to the late 19th-century American literary tradition, particularly in its exploration of domesticity, loss, and nature. Jackson remains primarily known for her prose, but her verse continues to be recognized for its quiet lyricism and historical place.
