Biografie
John McCrae was a Canadian poet, physician, and soldier who served in the First World War. He is best known for his poem 'In Flanders Fields', written in 1915 after the Second Battle of Ypres. The poem vividly depicts the poppies growing among soldiers' graves and gives voice to the fallen, urging the living to continue the fight. Its central imagery of poppies became an enduring symbol of remembrance for war dead. McCrae's poetry often reflects themes of duty, sacrifice, and the transient beauty of nature. He served as a field surgeon in the Canadian Army Medical Corps and was deeply affected by the death of a close friend in battle. His collection 'In Flanders Fields and Other Poems' was published posthumously. McCrae died of pneumonia while on active duty in 1918. His legacy endures through annual Remembrance Day observances and the widespread use of the poppy emblem.
