Biography
Joseph Warton was an English poet, critic, and headmaster of Winchester College. His literary work is associated with the pre-Romantic movement, reacting against the neoclassical emphasis on reason by elevating the role of the sublime and the imagination. In poems such as “The Enthusiast” and his odes, he explores solitary reflection, the power of nature, and emotional intensity. His critical prose, particularly the Essay on the Genius and Writings of Pope, argued for a broader hierarchy of poetic kinds and helped shift taste toward the romantic valuation of originality and feeling. Although his own verse often remains within Augustan forms, its thematic preoccupations anticipate the concerns of later Romantic poets. As a member of the literary Warton family, he contributed alongside his brother Thomas to a gradual redefinition of English poetic sensibility in the later 18th century.
