A Letter to Lady Margaret Cavendish Holles-Harley, when a Child
MY noble, lovely, little Peggy, Let this my First Epistle beg ye, At dawn of morn, and close of even, To lift your heart and hands to Heaven. In double duty say your prayer: Our Father first, then Notre Pere.
And, dearest child, along the day, In every thing you do and say, Obey and please my lord and lady, So God shall love and angels aid ye.
If to these precepts you attend, No second letter need I send, And so I rest your constant friend.
Biografía
Matthew Prior was an English poet and diplomat born in 1664 and died in 1721. He served as a diplomat, notably playing a role in the negotiations of the Treaty of Utrecht. His poetry ranges from light satires and society verse to more serious philosophical works. Among his best-known poems are 'Alma; or, The Progress of the Mind' and 'Solomon on the Vanity of the World', which reflect on human nature and knowledge. His style blends classical erudition with a colloquial, conversational tone. Prior was a master of the octosyllabic couplet, which he employed with great skill. He occupies a significant place in the transition from Restoration to Augustan poetry. His works were widely read in his time and influenced later poets. Prior's ability to treat profound subjects with lightness and humor distinguishes his poetic voice.
