She wrote in English and published several collections including 'The Golden Threshold' (1905), 'The Bird of Time' (1912), and 'The Broken Wing' (1917). Her poetry is characterized by its musicality and vivid imagery drawn from Indian landscapes, folklore, and everyday life. Common themes include love, nature, and the beauty of the Indian subcontinent. As a prominent figure in the Indian independence movement, she served as the first woman president of the Indian National Congress in 1925. She also held the post of Governor of Uttar Pradesh after independence. Her work bridges the traditions of English Romantic poetry with Indian subjects, making her a significant voice in early Indian English literature. She is often referred to as the Nightingale of India for her melodious verse.
