Biography

Thomas Campbell was a Scottish poet born in Glasgow in 1777. He gained early recognition with the didactic poem ‘The Pleasures of Hope’, published in 1799. His later works include the narrative ‘Gertrude of Wyoming’ and several odes, such as ‘Ye Mariners of England’ and ‘Hohenlinden’. His poetry blends formal rhetoric with strong national sentiment and emotional appeal. Imagery of seafaring, warfare, and heroism recurs through his most enduring verses. He served as Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow and was a prominent literary figure of his time. His reputation declined after the Romantic era, but certain poems have remained in anthologies as representative of early nineteenth‑century patriotic verse.
