Biographie
Flatman was an English poet and painter active during the Restoration period. His verse frequently engages with religious themes, employing metaphysical conceits to meditate on mortality, divine judgment, and the soul's journey. Stylistically, his poetry combines intellectual playfulness with sincere devotion, reflecting the influence of the Metaphysical poets. He is best known for his collection 'Poems and Songs' (1674), which showcases his lyricism and thematic range. In addition to his literary work, Flatman was a skilled miniaturist, painting portraits of notable contemporaries. His poetic legacy, though modest, places him among the minor metaphysical writers of his time.
