Biography

William Lisle Bowles was an English poet and clergyman born in 1762 and died in 1850. He published his first collection, 'Fourteen Sonnets,' in 1789, which helped revive the sonnet form in English poetry. His sonnets often explore themes of time, memory, and the tranquil beauty of natural landscapes, expressed through a simple and musical style. The gentle, reflective tone of his work struck a chord with contemporaries, most notably Samuel Taylor Coleridge, who praised their emotional sincerity. Bowles also composed hymns, longer poems, and critical essays, but his sonnets remain his most lasting achievement. They bridge the neoclassical emphasis on order with Romantic introspection, marking a shift toward personal feeling in verse. Among his best-known works is 'Sonnet to the River Itchin,' an elegiac meditation on childhood and loss. His influence on the Romantic movement, though often understated, is evident in the early poetry of Wordsworth and Coleridge.
