Biografía

William Wordsworth (1770–1850) was a major English Romantic poet who, along with Samuel Taylor Coleridge, helped launch the Romantic Age in English literature with their joint publication Lyrical Ballads in 1798. He was born in the Lake District, a region that profoundly shaped his poetic vision. His work often emphasized the importance of nature, the value of everyday life, and the transformative power of emotion and memory. In poems like 'Tintern Abbey' and the 'Lucy' poems, he employed a plain, lyrical style to explore the relationship between the natural world and the human mind. Wordsworth's poetic philosophy, articulated in the Preface to Lyrical Ballads, advocated for a language 'really used by men' and focused on ordinary subjects. He believed poetry should arise from 'emotion recollected in tranquility.' His autobiographical epic, The Prelude, originally intended as a prologue to a larger philosophical work, is considered his masterpiece, tracing the growth of his own mind and poetic sensibility. Wordsworth served as Poet Laureate of England from 1843 until his death. His influence on subsequent generations of poets was immense, establishing him as one of the central figures of the Romantic movement.
