From the perspective of an adult looking back, a speaker remembers how, as a small child, she noticed people would suddenly vanish from her life. She didn’t have the concept of death, so she invented a story: they had simply moved away to far-off, untamed places. There’s a gentle, almost playful innocence in her early guess—“remote or settled Regions wild.” But then comes the blunt correction: “But did because they died.” The truth was deliberately kept from her. The speaker, now grown, recognizes that the adults around her hid the reality of death. The mood is wistful and a little lonely—there’s the ache of lost innocence, but also a tenderness for that younger self who pictured her vanished loved ones off on adventures. The final line lands with a quiet punch, the dashes and short lines feeling like memory returning in fragments, each pause heavy with what the child didn’t know.
