Ship Starting, The. — Summary

Walt WhitmanInspired

LO! the unbounded sea! On its breast a Ship starting, spreading all her sails—an ample Ship, carrying even her moonsails; The pennant is flying aloft, as she speeds, she speeds so stately—below, emulous waves press forward, They surround the Ship, with shining curving motions, and foam.

Right from the opening cry of “Lo!” we’re pulled before a limitless ocean, and a ship that’s just beginning its journey. Every sail is set—even the highest moonsails—and the craft feels “ample,” fully alive and ready. The pennant streams high as she sweeps forward with a stately, almost proud glide. There’s a thrill in that steady, majestic speed. Down below, the waves become “emulous,” as if they’re vying to match her grace. They press ahead in shining, curved swells and foam, surrounding the hull not with menace but with a kind of eager admiration. The speaker sounds breathless with wonder, caught up in a moment where human purpose and the sea’s wild beauty meet. The mood is one of exhilaration and awe—a departure that feels less like leaving and more like a joyful, surging dance between the ship and the deep.
