Sea-Change — Summary

You are no more, but sunken in a sea Sheer into dream, ten thousand leagues, you fell ; And now you lie green-golden, while a bell Swings with the tide, my heart : and all is well Till I look down, and wavering, the spell — Your loveliness — returns. There in the sea, Where you lie amber-pale and coral-cool, You are most loved, most lost, most beautiful.

A loved one has vanished into the depths, and the speaker imagines her not simply dead but changed—sunken far below into a dreamlike underwater world. The title’s “sea-change” hints at that transformation: what the water takes, it alters into something rich and strange. She lies green-golden, amber-pale, and coral-cool, as if the sea has made her luminous and remote. The speaker’s heart is a bell swinging with the tide, and for a while that motion feels almost peaceful. But the moment the speaker looks down, the spell wavers and her loveliness returns, pulling grief and longing back to the surface. The mood is hushed, blue, and hypnotic: an elegy in which loss and beauty are tangled together. She is “most loved, most lost, most beautiful” because distance and memory have made her unreachable and perfect. The sea becomes the place where sorrow keeps turning into adoration.

I understand what you were running for, Slim naked boy, and why from far inland You came between dark hills. I know the roar The sea makes in some ears. I understand.
