In the Dark — Summary

Helena ColemanContemplativo

When on the black abysses of the night My little candle throws a trembling beam, At first too faint and feeble it would seem To give security to straining sight; But presently we see its tiny light Across the perilous pathway sends a gleam That pierces through the darkness vast, supreme, And step by step we find our way aright.

So in the vast and limitless unknown, That wraps us with its fearful night around, At first the beam by faith or knowledge thrown Seems but to make the darkness more profound, But presently one step ahead is shown — Enough to prove that it is solid ground.

A single candle burning on a black night seems too faint to matter at first—barely a trembling gleam. Yet that small light is enough to pick out the path, and step by step the walker moves safely through the dark. The speaker then turns from the literal scene to the larger unknown we all face. Faith or knowledge may start out feeling just as weak: it can seem to make the surrounding darkness even more obvious. But then it shows one step ahead, enough to prove the ground is solid. The mood is quiet, tentative, and ultimately reassuring. There is no demand for full clarity, only a gentle trust that a little light is enough to keep moving. Seeing just one solid step ahead becomes its own form of comfort.
