My Little Reasons Why

Your tide pool eyes stared deep into the ocean of my soul bringing peace to unsettled cracks inside You were small enough to fit on one arm You had the world at your tiny feet You deserved so much more than I could give I promised you I'd try All because you brought me so much joy You were always my little reason why

Your fragile body shook with sobs I held you close telling you you're safe Landmines of broken glass lay around us You didn't deserve the pain I tried to keep you safe I promised I'd protect you That's my little reason why

I turned my back, just for a second I heard your innocent giggle I swung around as a splash filled the pool You were so small, not even a year I dived for you and I pulled you up You laughed as soon as you broke the water I broke my promise, I turned my back I didn't know what I would do if I lost you My little reason why

My eyes staring into nowhere Left thumb tracing lines across the dolls shoulder Almost replicating the lines on my own Your squeaky voice insisting you're old enough to know Only serves to remind me just how small you are So I put on my best smile For my little reasons why
