Mrs. Overcoat

You don't need to tell me How it happened, I was there I saw the rain fall And turn to ice I saw the people flock To the broken coffee machine I watched five grown men Fight over a throw blanket And when I called you You were too sad to speak You couldn't bear to see it You were too sad to even cry But we needed you We needed Mrs. Overcoat To keep our spirits warm; I was also there When they quit calling your name When they announced over the intercoms That you were dead I knew it was wrong But they'd take us away If I told them that And so I kept my mouth shut; I watched from a window As the children called for you And the poets sang Of all the exotic places you could be And the haters judged you Asking who believes in love anymore I remember when you laughed at the haters But then you cried It was too late to convince The masses huddled in front of their screens The broadcasts said you were dead So it had to be true; And now I hear the haters Asking the huddled masses Who believes in love anymore.
