Early, early before the sunrise The moist air, the fog in the grasses Sap in the trees, dew on the leaves Sound of boots and sandals Walking down the path through the forest Four feet, two by two, Coming from the hillside Followed by last night's breeze Fading from sea gusts To a tickle behind the ear A trickle of vapor Sweat still running down his face Falling to the soil Her hand on his back Heart still beating fast with fear Clutching at the scarf draped over his shoulder like a cape The branches and weeds knocked away Opened to the clear by his bare hands Still struggling to stand Weary, her arm wrapped around dearly The tower in nearsight, leaning into the clouds Rows and rows of columns that remind them How far the journey has taken Stopping under a tree, apples hanging Underneath the last moonlight She leaves from his side No more afraid by the moments past Taking from the limb Two red apples, one for her and one for him More tastful than any she'd picked before Sweet and juicy all the way down to the core Resting, for now Taking the time to spare Now that peace has come Sitting on the ground Leaning side to side, backs to the trunk Bitting into an apple, ready to fall asleep After a long night awake The Sun rising finally to the hearts of wake Eyes closing, thankful to see the light Glad to see the morning grow
