A Fable

A pollarded tree, totally defoliated by caterpillars, draped in hideous silk. A little further along the road, two crows were cornering a cat; The cat retired slowly, discretely, admitting defeat imperceptibly. The crows flew over to the co-op waste bins, and I heard them conversing, “We do violence to no-one”, said the first crow, stabbing with his beak at a piece of orange peel. “No-one need kill or eat anyone who (a sparrow flew past carrying a caterpillar to its little ones) that is anybody in this world.” It was nice to see how both the crows continued to meet on the midden of Mammalian Enterprises putting us at less distance from year to year until we said how tame they are, and, seen close to, quite likeable
