A man produced a chair out of an alley at the bus stop last winter. He was very pleased with it; It was a great chair - none of your series furniture, he told me, It was deserving of a fine living room, .. needed only new upholstery .. some varnish .. a little care. Presently the bus arrived and the man, myself, and the chair, notwithstanding the driver's feelings about furniture, left the marketplace.

In summer, I saw the man again. He was sitting on the ground, by the local public telephone, in the late evening. He said that a main pipe had burst. I remembered that this had actually happened the previous winter. Momentarily it had welded our community together and we talked (instead of running water). You raved about a chair - you hooligan! You try to carry your place in the world around with you. But your end is to sit on the ground by a speechless telephone telling me last year's news.

Uah!
