Went long.
Still missed
the catch — or rather,
the ball. Caught
nothing.
Didn’t have
to throw it back.
But carrying
it around
was a strain.
My arms still ache
from all that lack.
I am playing ball, you see.
Throw it down, it bounces up
Throw it up, it comes down
Throw it on to the wall
Hey! it comes right back to me.
Tired or bored playing ball
I fling it on the floor
Despondent, it rolls to a corner.
I slump down on a chair
Sit watching the ball.
It looks back at me, sullen.
Glowing red, it takes the shape
Of my heart
Shouts why I wouldn't play ball
With life.
In my hands, I’m holding
this unbearably heavy ball of hope.
Watch me fold under its gravity.
Come, help heft this globe
of hope for me, that I might rest
awhile, and replenish my strength.
For love he offered me his perfect world.
This world was so constricted, and so small,
It had no sort of loveliness at all,
And I flung back the little silly ball.
At that cold moralist I hotly hurled,
His perfect pure symmetrical small world.
