falling all night on me
that bridge to morning
heart childish as a troll
in a paper palace
a lie is as much to build with
as to laugh down
places made of bridges and old differences
I remember them afterwards
I have no friends but sleep
and the morning sand
thoughts wear off
light as thin ice
give no account how matters
stand in the world
how other minds
would loiter on a bridge
the rattle of fear
in every one of his rants
foxed with wine
I make my own water
in the cool of the evening
against the bridge
The apothecary is making with
his hands as common as water
the bridge to absence
where she met
her little night.
I sit on a bridge
drinking rain,
choosing a new ship
to set forth and talk about.
Walking papers — I have nothing more.
That and a sandwich.
I bring water to the bridge
and a cannon to judge the king.
Velvet land, given to make money:
the hole bad usage made of it,
the well, the firkin.
I take half
for a bridge to elsewhere,
water to comb my head
in the kitchen.
sitting alone in the dirt another’s bed
Music: the first clock,
before time had discourse
with arms.
A bridge in the night.
Let me down one cat a time:
the cat that wakes me by sitting on my face
the cat that ignores me
the cat that pushes vases off of tables
the cat that was once magic but now just lies around and gets fat
the cat that kills birds out of irritation at their wings
and the cat that disappears in the middle of a sentence
like a body flung from a bridge while the soul
carries on, oblivious,
yowling about the goddamn hunter’s moon.
I wonder why in the movies they always
seem to get the happy ending,
and I wonder, standing on the bridge,
why I had mine..
