How at sea he is, that monk!
Join with him and dine on herring,
chant and turn out to row
in a brave cup.
I am contained
in the cup of me.
Originally,
it is claimed, we came
from the sea.
Actually,
what emerged were versions
of something that could
turn into us. Nonetheless,
here I am, a full
cup of me,
a compound composed
of me, salt
water modified,
elaborated, prorated,
not quite yet
The sass’fras tea is red and clear
In my white china cup,
So pretty I keep peeping in
Before I drink it up.
I stir it with a silver spoon,
And sometimes I just hold
A little tea inside the spoon,
Like it was lined with gold.
It makes me hungry just to smell
The nice hot sass’fras tea,
And that’s one thing I really like
That they say’s good for me.
Five o’clock! You pause ...
Handle frail, old cups, pour tea,
And become grande dame.
Is she the sage who will not sip
The cup love presses to her lip ?
Or she who drinks the mad cup dry,
And turns with smiling face — to die?
As a hot traveller
Going through stones and sands,
Who sees clear water stir
Amid the weary lands,
Takes in his hollowed hands
The clean and lively water,
That trickles down his throat
Like laughter, like laughter,
So when you come to me
Across these parched places
And all the waste I see
Flowered with your graces,
I take between my hands
Your face like a rare cup,
Where kisses mix with laughter,
And drink and drink them up
Love with a liquid ecstasy
Did wholly fill me up,
And since his drink is sweet to me
Can I despise his cup?
My cup is empty to-night,
Cold and dry are its sides,
Chilled by the wind from the open window.
Empty and void, it sparkles white in the moonlight.
The room is filled with the strange scent
Of wistaria blossoms.
They sway in the moon's radiance
And tap against the wall.
But the cup of my heart is still,
And cold, and empty.
When you come, it brims
Red and trembling with blood,
Heart's blood for your drinking;
To fill your mouth with love
And the bitter-sweet taste of a soul.
