no laws will save us
the old simple manner that used to do
being gone
danger is an instrument
made of questions
I must be at home with hope
The gray fox sat
and gazed at us like an angel—
one that foamed at the mouth.
I refuse to write
another poem about
the goddamn crows.
Holding a rifle
is like holding an infant,
wary of setting it off.
It takes so long to look down,
the first time thinking it
would then and there either
shoot up or else drop off.
One hand on
the trigger one
hand on the hand.
and please my dear
don't come near
for what you will endure
I am not sure.
Your eyes were the sea
And just like the sea
They swallowed me
They were beautiful in ways that people wouldn't understand
But too dangerous with ways that seemed impossible
And I let them consume
And I kept sinking and sinking
Baby
You were the most beautiful way I could drown
You were supposed to be my safe place but you ended up being the reason I was in danger
The mountains and
flowering dogwoods
Were never so beautiful
as that day our brakes
completely failed
as we rolled down.
We plant fir
seedlings across
icy slopes.
Trees yet standing
scrape and worry
in moaning winds,
showering us with
bark and cones.
Will I see you
again, should one
of these fall
while my back
is bent?
I heard the water-fall rejoice
Singing like a choir,
I saw the sun flash out of it
Azure and amber fire.
The earth was like an open flower
Enamelled and arrayed,
The path I took to find its heart
Fluttered with sun and shade.
And while earth lured me, gently, gently,
Happy and all alone,
Suddenly a heavy snake
Reared black upon a stone.
These wet rocks where the tide has been,
Barnacled white and weeded brown
And slimed beneath to a beautiful green,
These wet rocks where the tide went down
Will show again when the tide is high
Faint and perilous, far from shore,
No place to dream, but a place to die,--
The bottom of the sea once more.
There was a child that wandered through
A giant's empty house all day,--
House full of wonderful things and new,
But no fit place for a child to play.
I cannot spare water or wine,
Tobacco-leaf, or poppy, or rose;
From the earth-poles to the Line,
All between that works or grows,
Every thing is kin of mine.
Give me agates for my meat,
Give me cantharids to eat,
From air and ocean bring me foods,
From all zones and altitudes.
From all natures, sharp and slimy,
Salt and basalt, wild and tame,
Tree, and lichen, ape, sea-lion,
Bird and reptile be my game.
Ivy for my fillet band,
Blinding dogwood in my hand,
Hemlock for my sherbet cull me,
When soft winds and sunny skies
With the green earth harmonize,
And the young and dewy dawn,
Bold as an unhunted fawn,
Up the windless heaven is gone,--
Laugh--for ambushed in the day,--
Clouds and whirlwinds watch their prey.
