Dave Bonta
the debts I shed eat
one little bit of me
they come for an account
of my general fear
and I a broke bard
change it into more useful letters
the night bus took me with it
and I am glad to be going
I will grow fur and believe
in the god of debt
I traffic in doubt
an altered state that I must not visit
but my own body was
the world I lacked most
like a debt run
farther and farther up
The city: a great experiment,
there where I never found
a clean plate against tomorrow,
paying many little debts
and all things in a hurry of business.
As cook, looking over my work,
I ate nothing but bread and cheese
and bread and butter.
The land is charging the sea
interest for the growing debt,
this diminution—
oysters in the office
the sea terms a bed.
making a speedy
estimate of debts—
his children play late
All this by-catch to carry away.
Who is going to sign for it? Who?
Some land must pay.
I count the stations of the sea.
I had sad money
and a din of debts all night,
things that come to wait:
the sun on ice,
a pretend home on foot.
we come to the country
in the country where no poor live
come into the country
and eat all our rent and debts
we have no papers but it being night
whose land is it
OWE OWE OWE OWE
OWE OWE OWE OWE
OWE OWE OWE OWE
OW OW OW O WE
To Vegas I go,
Naively optimistic,
Hoping to get lucky,
That one-in-a-million,
Flying over the desert,
In a pitch black sky,
Before my eyes widen,
To a city of lights,
I walk into the casino,
With plenty of cash,
Ready to play the odds,
To take a chance,
I pull on the lever,
Envision bar-bar-bar,
Never hearing that winning sound,
As I waste a few more dollars,
This is the debt I pay
Just for one riotous day,
Years of regret and grief,
Sorrow without relief.
Pay it I will to the end--
Until the grave, my friend,
Gives me a true release--
Gives me the clasp of peace.
Slight was the thing I bought,
Small was the debt I thought,
Poor was the loan at best--
God! but the interest!
