Sara Teasdale
My soul lives in my body's house,
And you have both the house and her--
But sometimes she is less your own
Than a wild, gay adventurer;
A restless and an eager wraith,
How can I tell what she will do--
Oh, I am sure of my body's faith,
But what if my soul broke faith with you?
God, if this were enough,
That I see things bare to the buff
And up to the buttocks in mire;
That I ask nor hope nor hire,
Nut in the husk,
Nor dawn beyond the dusk,
Nor life beyond death:
God, if this were faith!
Having felt thy wind in my face
Spit sorrow and disgrace,
Having seen thine evil doom
In Golgotha and Khartoum,
And the brutes, the work of thine hands,
Fill with injustice lands
And stain with blood the sea:
If still in my veins the glee
doubt flowers in each place I drink
each quiet home with the misfortune
of having me within
about my art
about my purpose
and I rant till past two
looking like people that had taken
leave of the world
we would go off to meet
the enemy towards evening
just as the great difference
between us was in doubt
saved by art
which puts us into doubt
all my cake will be dough
like night returned to a wing
at a conference my paper
tricks a blind hand into rising
like a tick to see
how simply I bleed
to draw a picture I take pains
to observe more than before
ink all in a fresh light
with perspective to delude one’s eye
it would make a man doubt
that ever he saw anything
I have not made as much
as I would choose
but I keep all doubt locked up
a nonsensical thing
I fear as a cousin of the hive
I traffic in doubt
an altered state that I must not visit
but my own body was
the world I lacked most
like a debt run
farther and farther up
things turn in my mind
doubt will operate as water
for something iron
but what passed last night
can I be with child
what can I be making
that might know me
I change onto a little side road
only to keep being doubtful
what I have of night
might ease my mind
I am a stranger to the committee
against anything distasteful
an old hat left to lie
at the end of town
I believe in doubt
and seek to be content
