"Heaven" has different Signs -- to me --

"Heaven" has different Signs -- to me -- Sometimes, I think that Noon Is but a symbol of the Place -- And when again, at Dawn, A mighty look runs round the World And settles in the Hills -- An Awe if it should be like that Upon the Ignorance steals -- The Orchard, when the Sun is on -- The Triumph of the Birds When they together Victory make -- Some Carnivals of Clouds -- The Rapture of a finished Day -- Returning to the West -- All these -- remind us of the place That Men call "paradise" --

I never felt at Home -- Below

I never felt at Home -- Below -- And in the Handsome Skies I shall not feel at Home -- I know -- I don't like Paradise -- Because it's Sunday -- all the time -- And Recess -- never comes -- And Eden'll be so lonesome Bright Wednesday Afternoons -- If God could make a visit -- Or ever took a Nap -- So not to see us -- but they say Himself -- a Telescope Perennial beholds us -- Myself would run away From Him -- and Holy Ghost -- and All -- But there's the "Judgement Day"!

The Lake

In spring of youth it was my lot To haunt of the wide world a spot The which I could not love the less-- So lovely was the loneliness Of a wild lake, with black rock bound, And the tall pines that towered around. But when the Night had thrown her pall Upon the spot, as upon all, And the mystic wind went by Murmuring in melody-- Then--ah, then, I would awake To the terror of the lone lake. Yet that terror was not fright, But a tremulous delight-- A feeling not the jewelled mine Could teach or bribe me to define--

To F--

Beloved! amid the earnest woes That crowd around my earthly path-- (Drear path, alas! where grows Not even one lonely rose)-- My soul at least a solace hath In dreams of thee, and therein knows An Eden of bland repose. And thus thy memory is to me Like some enchanted far-off isle In some tumultuous sea-- Some ocean throbbing far and free With storm--but where meanwhile Serenest skies continually Just o'er that one bright inland smile.

Hope

The Tree of Knowledge we in Eden prov'd; The Tree of Life was thence to Heav'n remov'd: Hope is the growth of Earth, the only Plant, Which either Heav'n, or Paradise cou'd want. Hell knows it not, to Us alone confin'd, And Cordial only to the Human Mind. Receive it then, t'expel these mortal Cares, Nor wave a Med'cine, which thy God prepares.
