If I could catch the green lantern of the firefly
I could see to write you a letter.
frog pond
reincarnated
as a puddle
enormous dead oak—
so much more sky
in the puddle
lone firefly
only the puddle
returns his blink
fear not
storms are on the way
little puddle
wind in my ears as if
a wood thrush could whisper
i hear someone taking
improbably far-apart steps
in the sound of black cherry trees
putting their pieces into play
those who like certainty
have the solace of mathematics
those who love the wild
empty themselves
if my ears conspire
to keep me thick-headed
tonight their little begging bowls
have returned to primal condition
let me dream too
in surround-sound
fireflies seen from inside
a dark house
wander like the spirits
of lost children
or thoughts flickering
between synapses
but it’s wedding season
and courtship can be perilous:
an evolutionary arms race
between related species
each with a signature pattern
of light and darkness
the females get hungry
waiting in the long grass
so switch to mimic
other species’ flash patterns
the same moon
in everyone’s phone
fireflies
Light-emitting diode,
baleful regardless of color,
our passport to a firefly future
of light without heat:
how it glows in the darkness,
like the wood-rot fungus known as foxfire.
I reach for it & startle
at the apparition of my finger—
clearly the finger of an alien
from some planet with a distant sun
& too many moons.
Two crickets call
nearly in unison.
Fireflies rise blinking
from the grass.
It’s the new moon
& the summer solstice:
a dark night, but short.
Heat lightning
on the horizon.
The humid air like silk,
like an unwound cocoon:
will we be cool enough
to sleep? Already
I hear the beginning
of a low growl.
If I remember correctly,
It began at the temples.
I thought it most distinguished
Mature, even attractive -
Though it was the foreboding
of things to come.
Over decades, it spread gradually
Over the head, face and chest.
Now I notice it appearing
On my forearm, in ones and twos.
It took away the lustre in my eyes,
Strength in my limbs -
The slowing down of the systems
Is ominous than ever.
It is evening; sitting in my armchair,
I look at the sunlight slanting,
oh firefly i'd rather die than ever say i love you
because i already know
my darkness is not meant for you
oh firefly
my darling firefly
i would only kill your glow
and leave teardrops everywhere
as you fall through the air
oh firefly i'd rather die so this must be goodbye
"Why? How could you...why?!"
"You deserve better."
"Don't! You don't get to say that! I want you!"
"I know. I know."
first rains.
neon fireflies
beside a black river…
Here come real stars to fill the upper skies,
And here on earth come emulating flies,
That though they never equal stars in size,
(And they were never really stars at heart)
Achieve at times a very star-like start.
Only, of course, they can’t sustain the part.
No firefly more forlorn, more gravely strays
Among the glories of the morning tree
Than I, who glide almost invisibly
Where apple boughs are white as brides' bouquets.
Beneath the arches of the orchard ways,
Only one tulip, that I start to see,
As though my own heart had dropped out of me,
Seems to have guessed that I, too, am ablaze.
My blood is full of gleamings like seafoam,
My body brims with something of the moon
And shakes, as if with wings that would unfold.
So, after dark, I bar the doors of home,
Lest those, who think that I am grey at noon,
Should stare at night to see that I am gold.
