over all the mills
a white haze
is this holy water
this form of plague
busy with dying
in her mind a haze
green and pretty
in the haze of the afternoon
drinking too much
my empty wishing
Ten thousand red-brown
mouths of chimney pots
gape at us as we descend,
jet engines howling, into the haze—
a mutual amazement.
Here is the yellow air
of our to-and-froing.
Here are the housing estates
and the scrapyards,
groomed swards of a park
and chaotic allotments,
the circling traffic.
There’s the river and
its slick sheen of a carcass.
Plane trees all in a line
make faint, green gestures
bare back. Thighs cool and soft between
the chair in the livingroom, the cup
from the kitchen, and the unforgettable tv.
to meet you after work, and you were late.
Couches surrounded the Old Capitol Building
like a haze with cushions. I sat down.
They are mowing wheat
Through the heavy days;
Through the silent heat
They are mowing wheat;
Flat fields retreat
Into shrouding haze;
They are mowing wheat
Through the heavy days.
Is it a dragonfly or a maple leaf
That settles softly down upon the water ?
