white Christmas
the dog desiring both
to be out and in
lying in bed
with my wife—
winter afternoon
My vision is going. I hear
a devilish tongue—
cold as a tumor,
vinegar boiled till thick.
I put on my coat
and do not put it off again till spring.
I preach the winter
coming on, the thorn in life.
A black flower went to
my Valentine—
we were merry and broke.
ice all morning
making a clear world
White winter: a mine of nothing,
a great iron book.
I dine alone with the lord of paint
and send to Africa for gold ore.
I do not find my fair
late wife.
As a tavern with my money
or will and a bull,
winter had the oak.
winter forest—
the vast iron-work of time called trees
Not quite rid
of myself, what
is best to keep?
According to
instructions received
from the Lord,
pleasure is a question
that I should
not understand,
my mouth ought
to rage. But
my books had been flags
without a country
and I a pen.
Cold cannot love
the winter, or
ice all gone
the city a treasury
of ash
white as noon, this ice—
this small arm which I am
not able to stir
stars stare back
through bare branches
great beasts of foliage
gone to ground
rustle in the night
like restless currency
with nowhere to hide
the trees go dormant
to dream shadow lives
as modern dancers
now that it’s
too cold for snakes
who will caress the air
with lightning tongues
